FOREST sport fixtures were decimated over the weekend after a hard frost left pitches across the district unplayable.

Just five football matches involving Dean sides went ahead on Saturday, with Lydney Town’s trip to Bracknell in Berkshire the highest billed fixture to get the go-ahead.

Five games in the Southern League Premier Division were called off, including Cinderford Town’s home match with league leading Leamington.

Manager Paul Michael previously expressed his frustration at a run of postponed fixtures as a result of frozen or waterlogged pitches before this weekend’s setback.

Town have now had four consecutive fixtures moved back, with their last match a 2-1 home defeat to Biggleswade Town on Saturday January 7.

“It’s disappointing,” Michael told The Forester last week.

“The Biggleswade match was our best performance since I arrived even though it ended in defeat.

“We had 28 shots on goal and I was really pleased with the way we played.”

“It would have been an ideal time to build on that and move forward with the next game, but having them cancelled almost stunts the momentum.

“We wanted to back up our performance with more of the same so it’s difficult for us.”

Broadwell’s County League fixture against visiting Little Stoke from Bristol was also called off.

Rugby was also not immune from the consequences of the frost. Lydney's home match in National Three South West against Bracknell was postponed.Drybrook had to call off their home South West One West fixture against Bideford early on Saturday morning to allow the travelling side from Devon plenty of notice.

Bream’s home game against Widden Old Boys in Gloucester One was also cancelled, as was the Gloucester Two clash between Ross-on-Wye and hosts Kingswood.
