A LOCAL archer has set a new benchmark in British Blind Sports archery, breaking his own record in impressive fashion.
Terry Piper, an International Blind Sports Federation World Champion, scored 509 in the Portsmouth round at a recent competition hosted by Deer Park Archers in Cheltenham, surpassing his previous record by 24 points.
The Portsmouth round is a standard indoor archery competition. Archers shoot 60 arrows at a target 20 yards away, with a maximum score of 600 points.
The visually impaired former serviceman, who lost his sight while serving in the armed forces, described the achievement as “absolutely delightful.” He added: “I’ve been trying to break 500 for several years since losing my sight. To finally do it is very satisfying.”
Piper now holds six British Blind Sports records in the visually impaired classification, a testament to his skill, dedication, and resilience.
Beyond competing, he is a coach at Bowmen of the Deans Archery Club and a passionate advocate for making archery accessible to people with physical or mental disabilities.
“Seeing people grow in confidence, skill and knowledge is obviously rewarding,” Piper said. “I am just grateful for the opportunity to support others, whatever their archery goals may be.”
The Deer Park Archers event, where Piper achieved his record-breaking score, is a fully inclusive competition that attracts archers with disabilities from across Gloucestershire and beyond.
The event features categories for all disabled classifications and accommodates a wide range of bow styles.
