Cinderford Town 2 Kings Langley 0
Southern League
Division One Championship
CINDERFORD Town celebrated their triumphant season, lifting two trophies on the same day as they were presented with the Southern League Division One South & West shield before beating Kings Langley.
Late goals from Gloucester City loanee Sammie Hicks and Ethan Moore secured another title – and a 26th clean sheet in all competitions.
Both sides probed earnestly in the first half, with Kings’ David Hutton to the fore, but no goal was forthcoming in the first half.
Cinderford battled away, but could make little headway against a resolute Kings’ defence.
The introduction of Steve Ward for the Division One Central champions, and Hicks for John Brough’s side, gave both teams more potency.
Ward soon set up leading scorer Mitchell Weiss, but his fierce volley was cleared off the line and in the 65th minute Weiss had and opportunity blocked on the line by Town defender Nick Rhodes. - an effort that forced the centre-back off injured.
Hicks however was causing no end of problems for Kings and the diminutive playmaker finally broke the deadlock in the 87th minute. He jinked through the visitors’ defence to fire low into the right hand corner.
As Kings pressed hard for the equaliser, Hicks drew a foul in the box and Moore confidently dispatched the penalty to seal victory for the hosts.
Both keepers dealt confidently with most threats on goal and as the game drew to a close it had looked likely that penalties would be the deciding factor until Cinderford’s late show.
The game was a fitting finale to celebrate both teams’ achievements and was played in an excellent spirit.
• BANBURY United will join Cinderford Town from Division One South & West in the Southern League Premier next year, having defeated Taunton Town 2-0 in the division’s play-off.
St Ives Town, of Cambridgeshire, are the fourth team to gain promotion after winning the Central Division play-off against AFC Rushden & Diamonds.
