A NEW project celebrating the Forest of Dean’s beauty and creativity is helping to support local artists, independent retailers and the Dean Heritage Centre through a unique collection of gift items.

The Inspired by the Forest project, run by the Dean Heritage Centre in Soudley, has produced a range of high-quality mugs and notebooks featuring original designs by artists who live in or are inspired by the Forest.

The aim is to create meaningful, locally-themed gifts that benefit the entire community.

The initial designs were selected by a public panel and have now gone into production. One of the most popular items, a Forest Animal mug, received strong support from local voters, with more than 85% saying they would buy it as a gift.

Similarly, over 90% of those who voted for the bluebell notebook said they would purchase it for themselves or someone else.

Profits from the sales will be shared between the artists, the Dean Heritage Centre, and the independent retailers who stock the items – ensuring the benefits are spread throughout the local economy.

Funding for the research and development phase of the project was granted by the Association of Independent Museums, which supports initiatives that encourage innovation in the heritage sector.

A spokesperson for the Dean Heritage Centre said: “We’re delighted with the response so far and excited to see the public getting behind our talented local artists. This project not only celebrates the Forest’s unique charm but also puts money directly back into the community.”

More products and artists will be added to the collection over time, with the project aiming to grow into a wide-ranging showcase of Forest-inspired art and design.
