A LOCAL charity is opening its gates to the community next month as it launches a new supported programme designed to help adults with learning or physical disabilities develop practical skills and confidence.
Orchard Trust has secured funding from the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation to develop its new Supported Farm Placements Programme, based at the Trust’s Stowfield smallholding in Lydbrook.
To mark the launch, the Trust will host a Farm Placement Open Day on Tuesday, March 10, from 10 AM to 12 PM, at its Stowfield site, giving residents, families and carers the chance to see the programme in action.
The placements are designed to offer more than time outdoors. By working across the smallholding and allotment, participants are supported to learn tangible life skills, build independence and reach personal milestones in a safe and structured environment.
Two types of placement are available. Animal Care Placements allow participants to work closely with animals in accessible paddocks as part of a supportive team. Gardening Placements focus on growing and land-based activities, using raised beds alongside indoor and outdoor growing spaces with seating.
The programme aims to deliver long-term benefits in three key areas. Participants are encouraged to develop soft skills such as teamwork, time management and communication through shared tasks. Practical animal care and horticulture skills help improve day-to-day independence, while successfully mastering new challenges supports confidence and self-belief.
Support is offered on a flexible, person-centred basis. Options range from small group sessions to one-to-one support, depending on individual needs, with fees varying accordingly.
Orchard Trust is inviting prospective participants, families and carers to attend the open day to see the impact of the placements first-hand. Further visits can also be arranged.
