WORRALL Hill Football Club, who boast some of the best facilities in the Dean, have folded, just a week before the new season.

The club had just spent £1,000 on new goalposts, £100 on match balls and £560 on a new kit that they had only worn once, in a friendly. The club also owns a minibus.

Club spokesman Richard Watkins cited a lack of players and a lack of interest in the club as the reasons for the shock demise.

He said: "In the past 12 years we have won promotions and County and League Cups. Ian Dawson has run the side for the past three years, but he packed up at the end of last season. Carl Smith was going to manage the team and we had 22 players signed on, but for whatever reason he left and so did a lot of the players.

"We were down to 12 players, some of whom couldn't play every week. You can't run a football club like that, cancelling games and getting fined for it.
