LYDNEY Town bounced back from a disappointing midweek performance to beat Fairford Town 2-0 in the Hellenic Premier.

The visitors from the Cotswolds arrived at Sansom Park in seventh while Town are hovering above the relegation zone.

Before kick-off there was a two-minute in tribute to Rob Jonnson who died recently.

He was described as an excellent goalkeeper who was integral to Town’s success in the late 1970s.

Fairford started brightly but Lydney were soon asserting pressure, particularly through wide men O’Rien Reid and Ethan Vaughan.

Town took the lead on 25 minutes after Morgan Ewing swept home after a shot was blocked.

As confidence grew, both Ewing and Vaughan had opportunities to add to the tally.

Fairford were always a threat at the other end, Charlie Holliday went close with a header and Lydney keeper Alex Causon made a fine save from a Sol Pryce free kick.

Lydney remained one up at the break and the second period followed a similar pattern to the first with both sides having plenty of possession. Shaun Warren replaced the injured Keelan Hamblett, who had started at full-back shortly after the restart.

The second came after an hour after the ball had been cleared following an attack down the centre.

As it dropped some 30 yards from goal, fullback Joss Lynden took a touch and hit a dipping volley into the top corner.

Morley-Lyne made way for Ibby Olateju and the pacey striker should have opened his account but he slid a great chance wide of the post. Colby Kemper replaced the busy Kposowa in the final stages and although Fairford pushed forward, Lydney held out for a precious three points.

There were several candidates for man-of-the-match but the general thought of the supporters was that once again skipper Jordi Sheen led by example.
