Second-placed Luctonians edged past Cinderford in an attritional National Two West contest played in heavy conditions at Mortimer Park.

The visitors opened the scoring in the fourth minute, when Jack Condliffe landed a penalty, but the Leominster side responded almost immediately when Jack Goodwin scored a try from the base of a driving maul.

The remainder of the first half was a tight affair, with the defensive qualities of both teams to the fore.

Condliffe was on target with his second penalty after 29 minutes of play, to give Cinderford a 5-6 lead at the interval.

The game opened up a little after the break, and Goodwin weaved his way over to score his second try, before Rob Aikman ran in a try to give the home team some breathing space at 15-6.

The visitors gained some reward for their efforts in the closing stages of the match when Condliffe finished off a well-constructed move to score a try and secure a losing bonus point for his team.

Cinderford are now seventh in the table but level on points with the team above them, Hornets.

On Saturday (February 28) they are back at the Bells Sports and Rugby Ground to face Chester.

Cinderford: Matt Cotton, Nathan Taylor, James Elliott, Tyler Jerrum (captain), Reeve Brighty, Ben Carpenter, Jake Polledri, Reilly Scriven, Henry Watts, Jack Condliffle, Harry Tovey, Morgan Davies, Sean Gardner, Sam Smith, Sonny Greenman.

Replacements: Sam Baker, Alex Bosworth, Oliver Johnson, Callum Thompson, Rio Ebanks.

There was a weekend to remember for the Cinderford club’s Harry McCoy.

On Saturday he was at Twickenham representing the club as part of the RFU’s pitch pageantry before England’s Six Nations match against Ireland.

He was also selected to be part of the Gloucestershire U20 team that was due to play Somerset on Sunday.
