JO Roberts Cup Final

Broadwell Reserves 4

Woolaston 7

after extra-time)

HEAVY rain and a soaking wet pitch made defending a nightmare in this Roberts Cup clash at Ellwood Football Club on Monday evening.

Woolaston, a team with a strong cup pedigree in recent seasons, earned themselves another piece of silverware after this breathtaking extra-time win.

Lyndon Starr opened the scoring for Woolaston, then Gareth Rose made it 2-0.

Ross Gabriel pulled one back for Broadwell to keep them in the game.

Three goals in five crazy minutes before half-time turned the game on its head and gave Broadwell a 4-2 advantage.

Andy Griffiths, Chris Jones and Ross Gabriel all found the net and Woolaston were relieved to hear the half-time whistle.

A Craig Lewis own-goal gave Woolaston renewed hope and a second goal from Starr levelled things up and took the game into extra-time.

Woolaston finished the contest the stronger.

Substitute Roger Wakefield put them ahead, before Broadwell had Dave Stevens sent off following a second yellow card.

Super sub Wakefield netted his second to give Woolaston a 6-4 lead.

The game was up for Broadwell in the second period of extra-time when Rob Stanyer became the second Broadwell player to be sent off for denying Woolaston an obvious scoring opportunity.

Carl Adams rubbed salt into Broadwell's wounds with Woolaston's seventh goal.
