LYDNEY RFC have announced the return of two well-known names as the club prepares for its forthcoming Regional One Tribute South West season.

Rhys Oakley will be the Severnsiders’ new head coach, whille on the playing side new director of rugby Sam Arnott has also strengthened his talent pool with the signing of Brad Barnes, who plays at fly-half – the position Arnott himself filled with such distinction.

The return of Rhys Oakley is part of the drive to improve what the club offers both on and off the field, said Arnott.

He said: “Rhys previously spent time with Lydney prior to Covid.

“He is an exceptional coach, and will bring in a wealth of experience.

“Having worked alongside him before I know how beneficial he will be for this young hungry Lydney squad.

“He will work alongside club stalwarts Paul Kiely and Paul Price in the forwards, who were both pivotal in us getting promoted last season.

“As a club we are striving to improve every aspect of what we can offer as a rugby product, on and off the field.

“Bringing coaches like Rhys to the club will only enhance that.”

Brad Barnes comes to Regentsholme having spent nine seasons at National Two level with Clifton RFC.

Arnott said: “He is a 10 who likes to attack the gain line, and is also a prolific goal kicker.

“He will bring a lot to this young talented squad.

“He will add a lot of flair to what Is an already exciting back line.

“He comes with an affiliation to the club, having played for us previously, when we were last in the national leagues.”

The new league season begins with Lydney hosting Devonport Services on September 3.

They make the short trip across the Forest a week later for their first away fixture at Drybrook.
