FA Cup

Preliminary Round

Cinderford Town 5

Abingdon Town 0

A HOME tie with Merthyr Town in the First Qualifying Round on September 8 is Cinderford's reward for easily dispatching plucky Abingdon.

Cinderford controlled this match from start to finish and could easily have won by even more goals, but for the Abingdon keeper.

Centre-forward Lewis Sommers was a handful during the first half. He made way for Karim Rendall, who terrorised the visitors with pace rather than size and power.

The first goal came in the 23rd minute. Matt Barnes – looking much more confident this season – cut infield and drove a shot past Hambling.

The Abingdon keeper did well to stop shots from Dave Bird and Warren Archer, but Sommers doubled the lead with a close range effort in the 36th minute.

Town wasted little time adding to their lead in the second half.

Dale Evans, so often the unsung man in the middle of midfield, got on the end of a Lee Smith pass just five minutes after the restart.

Two more subs combined for the fourth goal, with Dean Lee setting up Craig Tait.

Hambling continued to make saves, but he was beaten again eight minutes from time by Rendall, following more good work from Barnes and Tait.

Tait almost made it six, but Hambling turned the ball into the side netting.
