Clevedon 0
Cinderford Town 2
DESPITE the frustrations of recent performances and the poor home form, Town have made definite progress this season under Steve Peters.
The former Bristol Rovers defender has assembled a squad with an average age of 22.
A bit of tinkering here and there over the summer and there's every reason to believe that the Foresters can fare even better than 10th in the league.
Cinderford dominated from start to finish at Clevedon.
Matt Barnes and Mike Whittington both went close to scoring early on, then skipper Dale Evans had an effort saved by Mellor. On 30 minutes Cinderford's pressure finally told when an accurate Barnes corner was headed past his own keeper by Thorne.
Towards the end of the first half, Greg Lewis narrowly failed to convert a Barnes free-kick.
Five minutes into the second half, Nick McCootie's cross was cleared to Danny Haines who lashed in an unstoppable 30-yard drive against one of his former clubs.
Clevedon keeper Mellor escaped with a yellow card after bringing down Whittington in the box, but he redeemed himself by athletically tipping Whittington's penalty over the bar.
At the other end, Greg Lewis was adjudged to have fouled Hemmings, whose woeful spot-kick comfortably missed the target.
With player of the season Lewis and man of the match Dan Harrison comfortably dealing with everything Clevedon threw at them (which in truth, was not very much), Cinderford coasted to one of the easiest wins of their season.
Town keeper Ben John was rarely called into action as Cinderford controlled midfield possession. A good passing move almost brought a third goal for Dean Lee, but the winger shot wide of the post.
Cinderford Town: Ben John, Warren Archer, Danny Haines, Dan Harrison, Greg Lewis, Dale Evans (capt), Matt Barnes (Brad Andrews), Nick Hancock, Nick McCootie (Kris Miller) Mike Whittington (Lewis Sommers), Dean Lee. Subs not used: Matt Smith, Ashley Malcolm.
