ELATED Sam Hughes has been crowned the world under-18s angling champion after achieving a perfect score during the World Youth Championships in France.

The Berry Hill youngster saw off 55 other competitors, including his three England teammates, over the two-day competition to secure the gold medal for his country and return to the Forest as a world champ.

"I'm very proud," said Sam's dad Chris.

"It's difficult to put into words to be honest. It's just absolutely amazing."

A former member of Forest of Dean Angling Club, 18-year-old Sam now captains the Matrix Tameside club in Manchester, while working as an apprentice for AJK Joining in Lydney.

"Sam is always undoubtedly grateful for the support of his family, friends & Employer Mr. Adrian Knox of AJK Carpentry along with Andy Neal & The Bait Tech Team who has been his main sponsor since 2011," Chris added.

Gloucestershire College student Sam has a history of doing well at big events, having won Fish-O-Mania live on Sky Sports in2011.
