Lydney RFC have appointed tight head prop Jack Spencer as their new captain – following in the footsteps of dad David.
Following last season’s promotion, Spencer will lead them in a new league Regional One South West writes Roger Pike.
Spencer brings a wealth of experience to Lydneys young squad, he is another great player from the ‘conveyor belt’ at Hartpury college.
He has played county rugby at under-16, under-18, under-20 and men’s level and was capped by England at under-18.
He spent two seasons at Gloucester, winning two first team appearances then played for Worcester and Stourbridge.
In 2019 he joined Clifton but moved to Lydney during last season and was instrumental in helping the Severnsiders get promotion.
Spencer said:”It’s a real honour to become captain. Lydney has a huge rugby history with some great past captains.
“My father once captained Lydney so I know expectations will be high and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
The club’s new Director of Rugby, Sam Arnott, added: “We have a young squad and will be playing a much higher standard of teams next season so it’s important we were able to appoint Jack as captain to help use his experience managing the team on and off the field.
“We are still looking to recruit for the season ahead in our first and second team squads so would urge any interested players to contact us immediately as we resume pre-season training in just four weeks’ time.”
The club has also announced four pre-season games to be held in August.
They kick-off with a trip to Bristol to meet Dings Crusaders on Friday, August 12.
The Severnsiders welcome Chosen Hill Former Pupils on Friday, August 19.
Hucclecote are the visitors on Wednesday, August 24 and the pre-season with a trip to Gloucester to face Matson the following day, Thursday, August 25.
All matches kick off at 7.30pm.
