DRYBROOK endured a grim afternoon on the road as they slumped to a 52 to 10 defeat at Lichfield, in what was one of their most uncharacteristic performances of the season, writes Chris Tingle.
The day felt dark and dismal from the outset and not just because of the weather. Supporters are used to seeing a Drybrook side that digs in regardless of the scoreline, but this was a rare outing where the squad struggled to find their usual rhythm and intensity against a well organised opposition.
Lichfield made a sharp start and were seven points up within six minutes. Drybrook hit back with a promising spell of possession that earned a penalty, calmly slotted by Josh Burnett, offering a brief foothold.
The hosts quickly regained control, using their pick and drive play to punch holes in the Drybrook defence. Some unusually soft tackling allowed Lichfield to cross again, before a penalty try was awarded when their winger was impeded chasing a kick ahead.
Trailing 21 to 3 at the break, Drybrook needed a strong start to the second half, but instead Lichfield pulled further away. Four tries in a damaging 20 minute spell took the game well beyond reach and opened up a commanding 45 to 3 lead that the visitors could do little to halt.
Drybrook did have a moment to cheer when Mitch Bourne powered over for a consolation try, converted by Burnett.
Lichfield responded quickly with another score to round off a deserved 52 to 10 victory, underlining the gulf between the sides on the day.
There were still positives in individual displays, with Bourne and Jake Moss working tirelessly throughout, and long term absentee Mitch Baldwin making a welcome return to the field after injury.
Drybrook will now look to put this performance behind them as they prepare to host Lutterworth this weekend.
