NEWENT head coach Dan Murphy praised the ‘hunger, grit and determination’ shown by his side as they secured a win over South West One West play-off contenders Chew Valley.

This win, coupled with Lydney’s defeat of Cleve, lifted the Green Army out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.

Chew Valley shaded the try count, but were made to pay for indiscipline as Newent’s fly-half Tom Webb kicked six out of six penalty goals.

Webb opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a straightforward three-pointer after Chew were penalised on their 22.
