NEWENT director of rugby Andy Addis praised the club’s character and his coaching staff after their extra-time win over Drybrook this weekend.
A fiery Forest derby finished 12-12 in normal time, meaning a draw for the two sides in their South West One West fixture.
But the match doubled up as a Combination Cup match, with Newent progressing by 25-19.
“It was a good game, played brilliantly by a couple of good sides,” Addis said.
“Local derbies are always more intense, and it was a great atmosphere.
“There were loads of people there, supporters from both sides, which we’re very grateful for.
“They must have had an excellent afternoon because it was a great game.
“We made a few mistakes at the start and they capitalised on them, but we took our chances well too.
“A couple of young lads were outstanding for us. Tom Webb has been a revelation this year and my son Mike at tight-head prop is doing well. They have helped massively.
“We have been very happy with how we’ve been so far. It’s a hard league.”
Addis said the fitness work by head coach Ross McMillan made the difference in the end, adding: “In extra time, the fitness and mentality took us through.
“The game showed the character of both sides.
“Joe Goatley scored a great try and the drop goal was excellent.
“Credit to Drybrook for coming back the way they did. It just showed the heart and the spirit of local rugby and local sport.”
