CINDERFORD United returned to winning ways with a battling 25-16 victory over Gordon League at Bell Sports and Rugby Park on Saturday, overcoming difficult conditions with an impressive second-half display.
Strong winds made life difficult for both teams throughout the afternoon, but United produced their best rugby after the interval to secure a welcome result ahead of a challenging trip to the league leaders.
Charlie Stallard gave the hosts the perfect start when he crossed for the opening try, putting Cinderford 5-0 ahead.
Gordon League responded with an unconverted try to draw level, ensuring neither side could establish an early advantage in the testing conditions.
Stallard then demonstrated his kicking ability, landing two penalties to restore United's lead and move the home side 11-5 in front.
The visitors remained within touching distance, however, and reduced the deficit with a penalty before half-time, leaving Cinderford narrowly ahead at 11-8.
Gordon League emerged strongly after the break and another successful penalty brought the scores level at 11-11, setting up a tense contest.
But United responded emphatically, raising their performance despite having to play into the strong wind during the second period.
Dan Nicholls provided the breakthrough, powering over for Cinderford's second try to put the hosts back in control.
Stallard added the conversion, extending the advantage to seven points at 18-11 and rewarding United's growing confidence.
The home side continued to press forward and their improved attacking play soon produced another important score.
Sam Baker crossed for United's third try, with Matt Tinker successfully converting to stretch the lead to 25-11.
That gave Cinderford valuable breathing space, although Gordon League refused to surrender and continued battling until the closing stages.
The visitors managed a second unconverted try, reducing the margin to nine points, but United held firm to complete a deserved victory.
The result provided encouragement for manager Paul Morris, who believed his team's performance after half-time had been the difference between the sides.
He said: “The result was a much-needed boost for the United before an away match against league leaders Dings Knights next Saturday.
“Conditions were difficult, with the wind a prominent factor. We won the game because our best play came in the second half whilst playing into the strong wind.
“We were worthy winners because of our second-half efforts, but Gordon League played their part. They are well coached and highly motivated.
“We look forward to the challenge before us next Saturday and know where we have to improve if we are to succeed. We are in a better place due to our performance on Saturday.”
The victory was particularly satisfying given the difficult weather, with United showing patience and determination when the contest was finely balanced.
Nicholls and Baker supplied the decisive second-half tries, while Stallard's contribution with both ball and boot helped keep the scoreboard moving.
Although Gordon League twice fought back to draw level, United refused to let the momentum slip away. Their ability to find two tries while facing the wind ultimately settled the contest, giving the home crowd plenty to celebrate and providing an important platform for the demanding fixtures that now lie ahead.
Cinderford now face a stern examination away to Dings Knights next Saturday, with Morris hoping his players can carry their renewed confidence into a meeting with the league leaders.
