CINDERFORD Under-16s produced a spirited second-half fightback but were beaten 35-19 by Smiths during a challenging trip to Cheltenham on Sunday morning.
Despite several late withdrawals leaving them with just 18 players, the visitors showed determination against strong opposition and refused to let a difficult opening half define their performance.
Playing into a strong wind, Cinderford started brightly and put together several promising attacking phases before Olli Evans crossed out wide for the opening try.
Jai Parry added an excellent conversion from a difficult angle to give Cinderford an early seven-point advantage.
However, Smiths responded emphatically, taking control of the contest and scoring five tries as the visitors struggled to maintain their momentum.
Cinderford regrouped after the interval and began to enjoy more possession, producing some of their best rugby of the morning.
Evans crossed for his second try before converting impressively from the touchline to give the travelling side renewed confidence.
A powerful break through the middle from Tyler G then carried Cinderford deep into the Smiths 22, creating another attacking opportunity.
The visitors kept possession through several phases before Tyler forced his way over for a well-worked team try.
The conditions continued to cause problems, with the wind blowing the ball off the kicking tee before Evans narrowly missed a difficult drop-kick conversion.
Although Smiths held on to secure victory, Cinderford could take encouragement from their response and the commitment shown by every member of their travelling squad.
Their willingness to keep battling despite the difficult conditions demonstrated the character developing within the young team.
Ollie Weaver was named man of the match following an outstanding defensive display, with his relentless tackling and tireless work across the pitch earning particular praise.
The coaches will hope the improved second-half performance provides a platform for the squad as their season continues.
