BREAM-raised referee Wayne Barnes came under severe criticism for his performance while officiating Wales’ 19-10 Six Nations win over France on the weekend, with Wales head coach Warren Gatland no exception.
However it was a case of damned if you do or don’t for Barnes, who some felt should have penalised Wales further in Cardiff on Saturday.
“We conceded twice the number of penalties that we set as a target and we will need to look at that,” Gatland said after the match.
"I felt we did not get the rub of the green, but we need to look at ourselves as well. We need to get clarity on a few calls as a few scrum decisions went against us and there is always interpretation at the breakdown.
"In fairness, we need to look at ourselves as well to see why that penalty count was as high as it was.
"But one of the targets we have as a team is 10 penalties or less, and that puts you under a bit of pressure.”
It was a game in which Alex Cuthbert, from Minsterworth, made a try-saving tackle on Frenchman Maxime Medard with the score at 16-3 midway through the second half.
