TURBO charged wingers and midfield players with big engines will be all the rage when a bunch of local rally drivers take to the football field to play Aston Villa.

Petrol heads from the Forest of Dean Motor Club have agreed to swap racing boots for football ones in a one-off match at Cinderford Rugby Club on July 21 for local charities, including the Heart of the Forest School and the Children's Opportunities Centre in Coleford.

Villa's squad of former all-stars is managed by Neil Rioch, son of former Arsenal and Scotland player Bruce Rioch.

Their team is likely to include top names such as Lee Hendrie, Stan Collymore, Nigel Spink, Tony Morley and Gordon Cowans.

The match has been organised by Motor Club chairman Paul Willetts and vice-chairman Martyn Walby.

Paul said: "We had the idea a few months ago, sat down and drew up a plan. It has snowballed from there and we are really pleased to be playing Villa.

"They've promised to bring a strong side."

That might not be such good news to a clutch of drivers and co-drivers who have agreed to play in the match, including former Wyedean Rally winners Nik Elsmore, Craig Drew and Paul himself. Paul said: "I've not played football since I hurt my knee when I was about 16, but I used to play a bit in goal.

"The average age of our squad has to be at least 35 but we won't have any problems there."

In order to make the contest more even, the Motor Club squad will be beefed up by some quality ringers who know how to drive a team forward, especially one containing a few passengers.

Ex-Cheltenham Town player David Bird will manage the Motor Club squad and put them through their paces before the big match.

He also plans to draft in John Finnegan, Shane Duff, Julian Alsop and former Hereford United striker Stuart Phillips, a true legend of Edgar Street. Former Premiership referee Clive Wilkes will officiate. Paul added: "A lot of people don't realise how much the Motor Club does for the local community."
