ST BRIAVELS won the GEO Sandoe Cup at Broadwell on Bank Holiday Monday, beating Weston Athletic 1-0 in the final.

A seventh minute own-goal from Liam Parry was all that separated the two teams.

Weston dominated possession and probably had the better chances, but the Saints defended for their lives in testing wet conditions.

After years in the doldrums, St Briavels have now won two promotions, two West Dean Charities Cups and two Sandoe Cups in the past five years.

Goalkeeper Chris Forster, who was a busy man on Monday, said: "We were quite fortunate to win and rode our luck at times, but we never gave up.

"Weston are a good experienced side with a lot of former Ross Town players.

"A lot of the credit for our club's success should go to the managers Rob Meek and Mark Wines and our secretary Gill Skidmore. They do so much work behind the scenes – without them there wouldn't be a club. We just turn up and play."

Monday's final was well supported and although it was not a classic game, former Lydney Town keeper Chris believes the standard of the North Glos League is as high as ever.

He said: "Winning these cups is not easy because there are some outstanding players around.

"In Division One, where we play, every side has got a few very good players and there are no walkovers."
