NICK McCootie's winner six minutes from time sealed a deserved Cinderford victory in Berkshire.
Cinderford were without defender Greg Lewis and they also had to sign a new goalkeeper on loan prior to the match because of injuries to Alex Harris and Ben John.
Harris has been struggling with a groin injury for several weeks.
Dan Jackson, 19, came in from Weston-super-Mare and had a sound game.
Striker Aaron Cornwall scored inside a minute to give the visitors a perfect start.
The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Mark James was shown a red card for butting Dan Harrison, but they battled on bravely and remained firmly in the game.
Thatcham's equaliser came in the 71st minute after Cinderford failed to clear a free-kick.
Shane Kingston swivelled and hit a firm shot past Jackson.
There was a lengthy second half delay following an injury to a Thatcham player, but Cinderford moved the ball around confidently and finished the match the stronger.
Nick McCootie was on hand to finish off a fine passing move with time running out – handing Cinderford only their second win in their last nine matches.
