YOUNG motocross star Roan Delaney has been ruled out of next weekend’s FIN World Junior Championships in Estonia after being in a crash during training.

Roan, from near Lydney, was due to represent Great Britain at the competition on July 29-30.

But the 11-year-old suffered a broken leg in the crash when training with Team GB.

Roan’s dad Pat, who built first bike himself, said his son was an ’emotional wreck’ as he spoke from Mansfield Hospital where Roan is being treated.

“We’ve had some serious bad luck,” Pat said.

“He crashed and just said he felt winded, but soon after he said he couldn’t feel his leg.

“I looked down and it was just twisted. I straightened it out because he couldn’t feel anything but he has a broken femur.”

Before the crash, Pat spoke admirably about his son’s achievements in the sport so far.

Coalway Junior School student Roan rides in the 65cc class, which is aimed at riders aged between 10-12, and is also a member of the West Glos and Dean Forest Motorcycle Club.

In his first competitive year of riding, he won the All British Championships in Maisemore.

With two events left in this year’s British championship, Roan hopes to finish higher than his current fifth place and he will also competed in the Pirelli Masters and the famous Weston Beach Race in October.

A keen sportsperson, Roan is also a member of Forest of Dean Athletics Club and Lydney Swimming Club with his 13-year-old sister Orla.

He will begin studying at Monmouth Comprehensive School in September.
