THEY'VE watched the town's rugby players bask in the national limelight, but now it's time for Newent' s footballers to celebrate.

They've clinched the North Gloucestershire League title and with it, promotion back to the Northern Senior League.

When Newent Rugby Club reached the Twickenham final of the RFU Junior Vase, their pals from the football club sent them five A3 size 'good luck' cards, containing more than 100 signatures and messages.

This week, the footballers needed to beat title rivals Milkwall in their final game of the season to win the league. Milkwall needed just a draw to seize the title.

It was 0-0 with just seconds of stoppage time to play, when Justin Halfpenny popped up with a priceless goal for Newent Town.

It was hard luck on Milkwall, who also missed out on the title last season by losing their final match.
