THE Seniors week at Forest Hills began on Wednesday last week, as their usual Thursday tee times, were taken up by Gloucestershire Golf Captains’ Society.

The Wednesday competition was set up as a Pairs Shambles Greensomes, and all-but-two pairs managed to comply to the competition rules.

Count back had to be used to determine the winners, as the top three all finished with a score of nett 60.

The winners were Roger Preece and John Skinner, as they eased out Alan Ayling and Steve Keepax, who in turn pipped John Auton and Steve Giles into third with the same score.

On Thursday, Roger Hall and Geoff Norris were the winners of the Gloucestershire Captains’ Golf Society Autumn Cup, as they defeated 58 other pairs, with their Stableford score of 45 points on their home course.

Thursday also saw the club travel to Chipping Sodbury in the quarter final of the 2022 President’s Cup, but, unfortunately they fell just short, as they lost 3 - 2.

On Friday the club held the 2022 version of the Captains Past and Present competition.

With 11 ex-men’s captains in attendance, the winner was 2007 captain Alan Powell with 38 points, just ahead of 2004 Captain Allen Spencer, who finished a shot adrcft.

The ladies winner was 2001 Captain Marion Horne with 43 points, with Caroline Minahan (1994) in second place on 42.

The Saturday Stableford Yellow Tee Medal was won by Pete Walters with 79-13-66, on count back from Andrew Johnson and Alan Cheeseman.

On Saturday, the Club welcomed Brickhampton Court, in the latest edition of the Richard Mudge Memorial Trophy.

The visitors managed to win the trophy for the first time in 11 attempts last year, so stand-in Captain John Humphries was under an extreme amount of pressure in this year’s fixture.

In the opener Terry Davies and Gary French never really got to grips with the opposition, and eventually lost 3 & 1.

John Humphries and Darren Page were three up after five holes, but the wheels started to come off in the middle section of the round, and in the end the visitors won 3 & 1.

Things didn’t get any better as Pete Chisholm and Paul Hedges then lost their match 4 & 3.

With the half being good enough to see the trophy travel back to Gloucester, the Forest Hills tail had to wag very strongly.

Geoff Norris and Alan Powell managed to win a very tight match 3 & 1, to start the recovery, before Simon Killen and Gary Reddan came back from a first nine deficit, before shaking hands on the 17th, as they won 2 & 1.

Mike Steward and John Watkins brought the scores level, as they scraped home one up, the same score that was recorded by Chris Hardy and Geoff Pearson in the penultimate rubber, as they put their team in front for the first time.

With everything still to play for, Alan Edwards and Steve Jones brought relief to all concerned with the home team, as they won the last match 4 & 2, to leave the final score of Forest Hills 5-3 Brickhampton Court.

The Seniors team travelled to Knowle Golf Club in the quarter final of this year’s Seniors’ Scratch Foursomes competition also on Saturday, only to fall short as they lost 2.5 - 0.5
