CINDERFORD Town manager John Brough said he wasn’t surprised by his side’s late win against Tiverton Town last week, but only because his players have shown character all season long.
The Causeway club found themselves 2-1 down with seven minutes to go last Tuesday at home, having dominated the game for an hour and taken the lead on 2 minutes, but struck back twice before the final whistle to win 3-2.
“If you look at pure chances we should have won the game, I won’t say comfortably, but we had a few in the second half when we could have put the game past reach,” Brough said.
“To be 2-1 down on the 80th minute I thought it was our home record going, but it just shows the character of the players and the quality of what we’ve got in the squad to not just get the equaliser but go on and win the game.
|They did put a shift in and they’ve done that all season. At the end it was a fantastic result but it wasn’t a shock or a surprise because we’ve done that before and hopefully we’ll be able to do it again if needed between now and the end of the season.”
Brough offered an honest assessment of forward George Lloyd’s season, who has featured much less than expected due to a dip in form and a knee injury that kept him out in the early stages of the campaign.
Town’s head coach also said he is happy with the squad he’s built at The Causeway and isn’t looking for a new signing.
“If someone becomes available who is equal or better to what we’ve got then maybe,” he added.
“But we’ve done alright so far with the players we’ve got. We might look to do something but at the moment I’m really pleased with the 16 we’ve got in the squad so it’s probably a no for now.
“George has had an indifferent season. He came back in pre-season looking very sharp and a lot sharper than the season before.
“He scored in the first game but he just hasn’t done what he did last year. I know he had his knee injury which set him back and he is getting back to full fitness but we do expect more from George.
“I expect more from him from a team point of view but I also expect goals because that’s what he was good at last year.
“For whatever reason, and it’s not lack of effort or trying, it just hasn’t happened for George this year. We’ve still got 14 games to go and I’m hoping he can play a major part between now and then.”
Town now find themselves in second place with five games in hand on leaders Banbury after Saturday’s home match against Wantage Town was moved to last night due to a waterlogged pitch.
“It’s always nice to have the points but if you ask the Banbury manager I’m sure he’d tell you he’d rather be in our position because we’ve got five games in hand. It’s 15 points up for grabs,” Brough said.
“We know we’re going to have games Saturday-Tuesday for the rest of the season but we’re geared for that. We’ll monitor the training sessions, monitor the players and rotate when we feel necessary and rest players when they’re not in form.
“That’s the luxury of having a squad that can compete whichever 11 we put out on the pitch.”
