VINEY secretary Simon James says the club are hoping a new manager can bring new blood and enthusiasm to end their current plight.

Viney St Swithins are currently second from bottom of the North Gloucestershire League Premier Division and the reserves have lost all 15 of their games in Division Two.

Four of those losses were awarded to the opposition due to Viney Reserves being unable to raise a side.

The club’s secretary and former player-manager is still playing at 43 years old, such is the difficulty in having players available on a weekly basis.

But James added that it is a symptom of a wider problem in grassroots football in the Forest.

“I think local football needs to have a hard look at itself,” he said.

“It’s been a nightmare season. But the same problems seem to be happening everywhere.

“Players aren’t committed because they have to work on Saturdays these days to pay their mortgages.

“In the past, Saturdays were for football but that isn’t the case anymore.

“Redside have dropped out and they’ve been relatively successful; Soudley Reserves have gone and Ruardean Hill have been struggling with their third side.

“It’s a battle to keep two sides going.

“We’re looking to get a manager in who can bring players in and brings something to the table.

“We’ve had a few people say they are interested so what we’ll do is give it another week to see what transpires.”
