CINDERFORD youngster Luke Thomas faces an agonising three-week wait after trialling with Benfica this weekend.
16-year-old Luke, the brother of Cinderford Town’s Keiran, was in Portgual with the Cheltenham Town academy on tour and was spotted by scouts for the Portuguese powerhouse.
Luke had just begun a two-year scholarship with the Robins before setting out on the two-week tour where Benfica took a shine to the young forward.
They played him in an Under-17 game against Real Madrid and he’ll know in a few weeks if he’s set to start his footballing career in the Portuguese capital.
“I was told I did fantastically,” Luke said.
“When I played with Cheltenham, we won 4-1 and 2-1 and lost 2-1 in another game.
“Then Benfica asked me if I could trial with them in a game against Real Madrid and we won 1-0.”
Former Cheltenham left-back Jamie Victory has been coaching Luke, and passed him the news of his trial on Friday.
