THREE stars from Monmouthshire and Herefordshire have taken a major step in their footballing journey by signing with the official academy of professional club Cheltenham Town.

Hugo Colcombe from Hereford, and Monmouth brothers Sonny and Miller Rogers, have all been snapped up by the League One side after impressing in the Junior Premier League, the largest youth league in the world.

The trio were part of Cheltenham Town’s Mini Robins programme, which launched in Hereford two years ago and has already helped more than 40 young players earn spots at professional academies.

Andy Bevan, Football Development Manager at Cheltenham Town, said the latest signings are proof of the club’s commitment to giving local players a genuine pathway into professional football.

He said: “All three lads played a year up in the JPL as under 8s and rose to the challenge superbly. Their progression shows there’s real talent here in our local communities and that, when given the right environment, they can thrive.”

Sonny and Miller's father, who has coached the pair since their earliest footballing days at Monmouth Town, said the family is over the moon.

“Being the parents of Sonny and Miller, we couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved so far,” he said. “Sonny’s feet, work rate and speed have got him where he is now. Miller is technically very gifted and always plays with a smile. That’s what matters most, seeing them happy while doing what they love.”

Hugo said he was thrilled to be joining the Robins’ Academy: “I’m really looking forward to the next season with the academy. I can’t wait for the games against other academies and learning new skills.”

His parents added: “He has loved all the experiences offered to him by the development centre and the academy. He’s made some lovely friends and the staff have been very supportive and encouraging.”
