LYDNEY Town suffered their first league defeat of the season at Swindon Supermarine Reserves on Saturday, just days after continuing their encouraging start with victory over Brimscombe & Thrupp.

Town had returned to league action at Sansom Park on Tuesday following their FA Vase exit at Malmesbury, with Gloucestershire rivals Brimscombe the visitors.

After a poor opening half produced few chances, Lydney broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart. Abdul Ibrahim cut in from the left before firing in off the post to put the hosts ahead.

Brimscombe responded and had a Jake Love effort ruled out for offside, while Lydney missed opportunities to extend their advantage through Zac Pinchard, Ibrahim and Arthur Nkrumah.

Goalkeeper Tom Pass then produced an excellent one-handed save to deny Ryan Outram, while the visitors also saw penalty appeals waved away after Love went down inside the area.

Lydney held on for a 1-0 win in front of 137 spectators, taking their tally to 10 points from their opening four league games.

Their unbeaten league start ended at Swindon Supermarine Reserves on Saturday, however, as the hosts claimed a 4-2 victory.

Evan Black put Swindon ahead inside three minutes before stand-in captain Frankie Johnson levelled for Town on 21 minutes.

Casey Spenser-Harding restored the hosts’ advantage in first-half stoppage time, but Ibrahim made it 2-2 five minutes after the restart with his second goal in as many games.

Spenser-Harding struck again on 63 minutes before Tom Pitt added a fourth in stoppage time to secure the points.

The result left Lydney sixth with 10 points after five league matches.

Town now make the short trip to Newent Town on Bank Holiday Monday as they look to respond to their first league setback and continue what has nevertheless been a positive opening to the campaign.
