LYDNEY Town are still looking for their win and opening goal of the Hellenic League Premier.
They followed two goal-less draws with a 4-0 drubbing in Gloucester on Saturday.
Braces from Mason Lewis and Jack Beardsell saw Tuffley Rovers romp home on a hot afternoon at Glevum Park.
After a goalless opening quarter of an hour and first drinks break of the match, Tuffley broke the deadlock when Beardsell’s cross was headed back to him and the former Fairford Town man’s low half volley zoomed into the bottom corner.
It soon became two for the hosts when goalkeeper Elliot Jones, on loan from Gloucester City, played a long ball downfield, which saw Mason Lewis latch onto it and blast past Lydney Town keeper, Rich Thomas.
Lydney had three good chances from free kicks in and around the Tuffley area during the final 15 minutes of the half.
First, Lewis Bamford hit the wall before sending his follow up wide, then Declan Morley-Lyne whipped his effort over.
Morley-Lyne stepped up to fire in another free kick in added time, but his goalbound strike was well saved.
The game would go on to be decided in three key minutes at the start of the second half. First, Lewis Thompson created space on the edge of the Tuffley box, before firing just wide.
Then Tuffley went down the other end and after Lewis burst past his marker on the left side of the box, his driven cross snuck in at the back post and it was 3-0 and game over.
Three became four within four minutes when Birkett’s corner was headed home by Beardsell, who claimed his second goal of the game.
Just after the hour mark Elliot Jones produced another stunning save from yet another free kick for Lydney. This time Lewis Bamford curled an effort towards the top right corner of the net, only for Jones to claw the ball out of the top corner.
Three days earlier, Town played out a goal-less draw against Hereford Lads’ Club in a game that promised a hatful of scores.
Lewis Thompson weaved past three players only to drag his shot wide on 10 minutes and. Then at the other end Richard Thomas parried an Olly Price effort for a corner.
Bamford was causing problems with his darting runs in behind, while strike partner Thompson was his usual menacing self.
Lydney almost opened the scoring when some great play from Thompson and Bamford saw Harry Clarke get a shot away that was blocked on the line.
Thomas made a miraculous save five minutes later when an audacious effort from the half way line caught him off his line. The Lydney keeper managed to race back and scoop the ball over the bar from off the goal line.
Bamford thought he had scored as half-time approached but he was adjudged to have handled before firing home. He threatened again with the last action of the half, his shot beating Bell only to clip the post.
Hereford had an early chance before Lydney’s Steve Clarke headed a Dan Morgan cross over the bar.
There was drama on the hour mark as Lewis Bamford was felled in the box for a penalty. Lewis Thompson, successful twice the previous Saturday, this time saw his tame effort easily saved by Bell.
Morley-Lyne replaced Steve Clarke and was into the action immediately drilling a superb strike just wide of the far post. His threat in the air and long throws began to cause more problems for the visiting defenders.
Sam Wines and Keelan Hamblett came on for Harry Clarke and Jayson Watkins respectively as Lydney looked for a breakthrough.
With five minutes left a Morley-Lyne long throw was headed on at the near post by Sam Elliott and Tom Baldwin arrived late at the far post to slot the ball past Bell. Somehow, the linesman raised his flag for offside to the amazement of nearly everyone in the ground.
Lydney almost won it in the dying seconds as a cross from the left was headed but Baldwin’s header was flicked away/
The Reserves progressed in the Reg Davis Cup after beating Charfield 7-6 on penalties.
