WOMEN’S football has soared in popularity across the nation after England’s World Cup exploits - and the Forest of Dean is no exception.

The Dean’s two ladies clubs have both seen a rise in numbers since seeing England take third at the international tournament in Canada this summer, continuing the national trend.

Both Forest of Dean Ladies, based at Ellwood FC, and Mitcheldean Ladies finished fourth in their respective Gloucestershire County League divisions.

Forest of Dean are hoping to consolidate their position in Division One, according to club secretary Colin Watson, but the influx of potential new players could help them progress in a difficult league.

“There’s certainly been an increase in interest since the World Cup,” Watson said.

“With the success of the England team we would hope that it would get people interested and give more attention to the game.

“We’re always looking for success but it’s a tough league so consolidation is the aim."
