EX-Newent Community School student Joe Edwards has agreed a deal to sign with League One outfit Walsall.

Edwards, who is a former Aston Villa trainee and climbed the youth ranks at Bristol City to make four first team appearances at Ashton Gate, will join Walsall this month after his contract at Colchester United expires.

“I’m delighted to be here,” said Edwards of his move.

“It’s a fantastic club and they had a really good season last year.

“I’ve played against Walsall a few times before and they have always been a very good footballing side. They like to pass it about and they play with a good intensity.

“I had a meeting with the manager a few weeks ago and I came away thinking this was the club for me.”

Edwards captained Yeovil Town in 2014-15, playing against childhood heroes Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup. He went on to make over 100 appearances for Town before moving to Colchester following Yeovil’s relegation to League Two at the end of that season.

He then played 45 times for United, scoring twice in the 2015-16 season, and was named Players’ Player of the Year.

“Joe is an experienced front-foot defender who is a leader on and off the pitch,” said Walsall boss Jon Whitney

“I have been impressed with his performances when he has played against us over the years and he will be a valuable and influential member of the squad.”
