CINDERFORD Town chairman Ashley Saunders expressed his frustration at another incomplete fixture but admitted the decision to abandon their home match against Wimborne Town was ’the right one’.

Town were 2-1 up after 65 minutes before referee Richard Gardener sent the two sides back to the changing rooms thanks to goals from captain Keiran Thomas and debutante Matt Williams.

But Saunders was disappointed to see the labours of the Causeway’s ground staff wasted after Town have been without a completed fixture for almost a month.

“It was frustrating,” he said.

“A lot of work went in before the game and of course with a side coming from near Southampton it was disappointing.

“We had to make a decision quite early as to whether the game was on or not – we must have done it at about 9am.

“Officials said it was possible; the pitch was playable, but of course as the day went on the weather got worse and it’s frustrating for everyone.

“A lot of work went out the window.

“The players did have an hour’s worth of football which is good after so much time off. That possibly did the players some good.

“It’s disappointing for the supporters and everyone involved with the club.

“I did think it was the right decision, to abandon the game. I do agree with it because it just got worse and worse as the game went on.

“It was getting dangerous; players were slipping and sliding a lot after half-time and it could have caused some injuries.”

Despite the weather, Saunders was happy with the display from his club’s men; also praising the efforts of debutante Matt Williams, who is on loan from Gloucester City.

“I thought we played well in the first half, considering the conditions,” he added.

“We played some good football at times but the weather got the better of the game.

“I thought Matt Williams did very well. He was composed and having played at a higher level I think he has a lot to add to the side.

“He brought that experience to the side on Saturday and I think he will do very well for us.”

Saunders also waved away concerns of a fixture pile-up due to the postponed matches since Town’s last match, a 1-0 win at Banbury United.

“It’s early days, only being in January, so there’s plenty of time to reschedule.”
