ASTON Ingham booked their place in the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation Women’s Softball 100 Cup final after producing a dominant batting display to defeat Downend by 10 wickets at the WG Grace Memorial Ground on Sunday.

Chasing 190 for victory, Aston Ingham reached their target with 19 balls remaining, finishing on 190 without loss after openers Melissa Watson and Charlotte Yemm shared an unbroken partnership that left Downend without an answer.

Watson led the charge with an outstanding 87 not out from 48 balls, striking 13 fours and two sixes, while Yemm anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 56 from 45 deliveries, including nine boundaries.

Their composed approach combined controlled strokeplay with relentless running between the wickets, ensuring the target was always within reach despite Downend setting an imposing score.

The chase was boosted by 47 extras, but Aston Ingham still produced an exceptional batting performance against a side that had looked well placed after posting 189 for four from their 100 balls.

Earlier, Downend’s innings revolved around Amelia Humphrey, whose brilliant 97 from only 46 balls featured 19 fours and one six. Lynsey Laycock provided excellent support with an unbeaten 53, helping their side recover after slipping to four for two inside the opening exchanges.

Melissa Watson made the early breakthrough before Vanessa Ward removed Georgina Bale to leave Downend struggling. Wendy Flannery then delivered two important wickets, dismissing Humphrey just short of a deserved century before also claiming Vicky Mundy, finishing with figures of two wickets for 14 runs from 10 balls.

Although Downend recovered impressively through Humphrey and Laycock, Aston Ingham never allowed the innings to completely escape them and always believed they could overhaul the target.

Their confidence was fully justified as Watson and Yemm produced one of the club’s finest partnerships, refusing to offer a single chance throughout the chase. Downend’s bowlers struggled for consistency, conceding 46 wides and no balls, but Aston Ingham still punished every loose delivery and never eased their intensity.

Victory sends Aston Ingham into the competition final, where they will now have the opportunity to compete for county silverware after an outstanding all round display. Reaching the final represents another significant achievement for the club’s women’s section and continues an encouraging season built upon teamwork, confidence and consistent performances.

The result underlined the growing strength of Aston Ingham’s women’s programme, with every player contributing either through disciplined bowling, energetic fielding or calm support from the boundary.

Restricting Downend after Humphrey’s explosive innings ensured the target remained achievable, while the flawless chase demonstrated the confidence that has developed throughout the campaign.

Reaching the final is richly deserved reward for a squad that has continued improving with every round and now stands one victory away from lifting the trophy. Their clinical display in both disciplines will give whoever they face in the final plenty to think about, especially after seeing an unbeaten opening stand chase down a substantial total with such authority.

Momentum is firmly behind Aston Ingham as they prepare for the competition’s showpiece occasion. Confidence belief resilience have carried them into a deserved county final confidently.

With bat and ball Aston Ingham delivered when it mattered most, producing a performance worthy of a place in the final and giving themselves every reason to believe the trophy can now be theirs.
