TWO Commonwealth medals will be returning to the Forest of Dean district after Olympians Vicky Holland and Natasha Hunt tasted success on the Gold Coast.
Triathlon Olympic bronze medallist Holland, from Redmarley, picked up a silver medal in the mixed team relay for England – just missing out on a repeat gold from her performance in Glasgow four years ago.
Holland opened up a lead on the run during her leg of the relay, but the Australian quartet battled back to push Holland, Jess Learmonth and the Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jonny into second.
Holland and Jonny Brownlee kept up with the Gillian Backhouse and Matt Hauser.
But Ashleigh Gentle raced ahead of individual silver medal winner Learmonth and Alistair Brownlee was unable to catch Jacob Birtwhistle.
Natasha Hunt celebrated a podium place with England’s rugby sevens team as they defeated Canada 24-19 in the third place play-off.
England beat Fiji 17-5 in their opening match of the competition, a first for women’s rugby sevens at the games, but lost 29-12 to Australia in their second Pool B match.
Hunt struck one successful conversion from three against Fiji and one out of two against the hosts, before scoring two tries and three out of five conversions in a 45-0 mauling of Wales.
England lost out 26-5 in the semi-final against eventual gold medallists New Zealand but made amends to claim bronze against the Canadians.
