Newent is set for a bright new look after planners approved new lighting for the town’s historic Market House.
Forest of Dean District Council has given the green light for the installation of 10 discreet LED light units around the edges of the late 16th‑century timber‑framed landmark, paving the way for brighter, safer nights in the town centre this coming winter.
The scheme, proposed by Newent Town Council, will illuminate the open space beneath the building – locally known as the Undercroft – an area long criticised by residents and traders for becoming gloomy and unwelcoming after dark. Civic leaders also hope the improved lighting will help showcase the Market House during winter events, strengthening night‑time activity in the centre.
Planning officers were satisfied the proposal would not harm the Grade II listed structure. Kathryn Brown, FoDDC planning officer, said the lighting was acceptable and would not adversely affect the building, adding that the changes would help preserve and highlight the historic asset for future generations.
A supporting heritage report described the Market House as “a highly significant historic building” and a focal point of Newent’s conservation area, prized for its architecture, civic role and strong visual presence within the town’s streetscape.
Senior conservation officer Ninette Matthews told planners the Market House was originally built as a butter market around 1668 and later restored in 1864, when gothic windows and a distinctive semi‑octagonal bay were added. Despite Victorian alterations, the building has remained largely unaltered, retaining its open ground‑floor market space and enclosed first‑floor room.

The carefully positioned lighting, planners heard, will enhance safety and legibility while allowing residents and visitors to better appreciate one of Newent’s most celebrated historic buildings after sunset.
