AN ICY stretch of road in the Forest of Dean was closed for several hours after a road traffic collision on Clanna Lane, Alvington, on Monday, January 5.
Police were called to the scene following reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles on the narrow lane. Officers from the Forest of Dean Neighbourhood Policing Team attended and closed the road from both directions to allow the incident to be dealt with safely.
Despite the wintry conditions, police confirmed that no one was injured in the collision. However, the vehicles involved were left undriveable, meaning recovery crews were required before the lane could be reopened. As a result, Clanna Lane remained closed while suitable recovery arrangements were put in place.
Local residents reported disruption in the area, with motorists advised to avoid the route and seek alternative roads while the closure was in effect. One resident said that although everyone involved was safe, the damage to the vehicles meant delays were unavoidable as recovery vehicles were awaited.
Police used the incident to remind drivers of the dangers of travelling in icy conditions. Officers warned that stopping distances on ice can be up to ten times longer than on dry roads due to reduced tyre grip. A car travelling at 20mph may need around 120 metres to stop, while at motorway speeds the distance could stretch to over half a mile.
Drivers are being urged to reduce their speed significantly during cold weather, leave much larger gaps between vehicles, and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering where possible. Police stressed that standard wet-weather driving rules do not apply in icy conditions.
The Forest of Dean Neighbourhood Policing Team thanked residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation while the road was closed, and reiterated the importance of taking extra care on rural lanes during winter weather.
