FAMILIES across the Forest of Dean are being invited to shake off the winter chill with a steam-filled weekend at Perrygrove Railway, alongside a series of free entry days aimed at thanking key workers and school staff.

The Coleford attraction will host its Winter Warm-Up Steam Gala on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18, bringing its full fleet of steam locomotives into action for what promises to be a nostalgic start to the year.

Visitors can expect all of Perrygrove’s steam engines running across both days, with the added spectacle of rare double-heading and historic goods train operations.

The gala will also mark the final seasonal appearance of popular engine Anne in her distinctive purple livery before she heads off for a planned overhaul.

The weekend is designed as a full family day out, with unlimited train rides in enclosed heritage carriages included in the ticket price.

Away from the platforms, families can explore Perrygrove’s woodland trails, enjoy indoor hide and seek in the Twilight Village, and tackle the Treetop Adventure Trail and tunnel maze. Homemade food and warm drinks will also be available from the Platform Café.

Alongside the gala, Perrygrove Railway has announced a series of free entry weekends for key workers and school staff, as a gesture of thanks for their continued service.

MOD Defence Discount Card holders will be able to visit for free on Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25. Blue Light Card holders will be welcomed on Saturday, February 7 and Sunday, February 8, while all school staff, including teachers and support staff showing valid ID, can enjoy free entry on Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1.

Eligible card holders can bring family and friends with them, although free entry applies only to the card holder, with standard admission prices applying to additional guests.
