FOREST of Dean residents are being offered the chance to boost their kitchen confidence with a pair of free cookery courses launching this June in Mitcheldean and Lydbrook.

The four-week courses, funded by Gloucestershire County Council, are aimed at helping people prepare healthy, affordable meals while learning practical ways to reduce food waste.

Sessions will be held at Mitcheldean Community Centre and Lydbrook Memorial Hall, running on four consecutive Fridays from 10.30AM to 1.00PM, starting Friday, June 13 and ending Friday, July 4.

Each hands-on workshop will guide participants through the basics of seasonal cooking, including how to:

  • Prepare tasty and nutritious dishes using the best of each season’s fruit and vegetables
  • Select and store fresh produce to extend its shelf life
  • Make the most of leftovers and avoid common forms of food waste
  • Use simple cooking techniques to enhance natural flavours without relying on salt or processed ingredients

Organisers say the course is ideal for anyone wanting to improve their cooking skills, save money on their weekly shop, and make more sustainable food choices.

Karen Stiles, who is co-ordinating the programme, said the courses are particularly aimed at supporting low-income households in the Forest of Dean.

“These free sessions are a great opportunity for people to learn new skills that can really make a difference to their health and their budgets,” she said. “Whether you want to eat more vegetables, discover easy recipes, or cut down on food waste at home, this course is for you.”

The courses are open to adults of all ages, but eligibility criteria may apply, with priority given to those on low incomes or experiencing food insecurity.

Spaces are limited, and early booking is advised. To find out more or to register your interest, email [email protected].
