CINDERFORD chart stars EMF are marking 35 years since their breakthrough album Schubert Dip with a deluxe reissue and a series of UK shows, just months after the death of founding member Derry Brownson.
The Forest of Dean band’s debut album, which featured their worldwide hit Unbelievable, will be reissued by Cherry Red Records on December 4 as both a 57-track four-CD box set and limited-edition double vinyl.
EMF will also take Schubert Dip back on the road in December, performing the album in full during six UK shows, including a home county date at Gloucester Guildhall on Saturday, December 12.
The shows will see the band play two sets each night, opening with Schubert Dip from beginning to end before returning for a second set featuring what has been billed as the “Best Of The Rest”.
Other dates will take EMF to Stockton-on-Tees, York, Hebden Bridge, Glasgow and London, following shows in Amsterdam, Berlin, Cologne, Sint-Niklaas and Paris.
Released in May 1991, Schubert Dip reached number three in the UK Albums Chart and number 12 on the US Billboard 200.
It included I Believe, Lies and Children as well as Unbelievable, which reached number three in the UK before topping the US Billboard Hot 100.
The new four-CD edition contains 57 tracks, including 19 previously unreleased recordings, alongside remixes, B-sides, live recordings and demos.
A 44-page booklet will feature rare images and lyrics, while a new sleevenote includes contributions from singer James Atkin and guitarist Ian Dench.
The reissue offers fans a deeper look at the record that transformed EMF from a young Forest of Dean group into international stars, bringing together familiar singles with material from the band’s extensive early years and archive.
The anniversary comes during an emotional year for the Cinderford-formed band following the death of original keyboard player Derran “Derry” Brownson in August.
Derry, 55, died after being diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and was remembered in his hometown when his funeral took place on September 18.
People lined Cinderford’s streets to pay their respects as his funeral cortege travelled through the town to the Forest of Dean Crematorium, passing the blue plaque unveiled in honour of EMF last year.
Mourners clapped and threw yellow flowers, reflecting Derry’s support for Wolverhampton Wanderers, as the hearse passed through the High Street.
A private family service followed at the crematorium.
Derry had continued performing with EMF following his diagnosis, including an emotional hometown appearance at Cindyfest in Cinderford in 2025.
Following his death, the band said they were “devastated” and grateful he had been able to join them on stage during his final months.
EMF were formed in Cinderford in 1989, with the original line-up featuring James Atkin, Ian Dench, Derry Brownson, Zac Foley and Mark Decloedt.
Thirty-five years after Schubert Dip propelled the Forest band onto the international stage, its anniversary celebrations will now also serve as a reminder of Derry’s role in the album and EMF’s extraordinary rise from Cinderford to worldwide success.
