Callum Perrott was rushed to hospital with head injuries after being knocked off his bike by a tractor in Bream.
The nine-year-old had been riding down a pavement in the High Street and had just turned into New Road when his bike struck the tractor.
Callum is thought to have suffered a broken jaw along with cuts and bruises. His mountain bike was left lying on the pavement with a buckled front wheel.
Paramedics rushed to the scene at around 3.30pm last Thursday and took the boy to Frenchay Hospital near Bristol where he underwent tests.
Police closed New Road for several hours while they carried out an investigation at the scene.
One villager, who did not want to be named, said: "Nine times out of 10 he would have been wearing a bicycle helmet. He's a very sensible lad. Unfortunately the one time he goes out without it this happens."
Callum's mum came to the scene before he was taken away in the ambulance and he was said to be conscious.
It is thought doctors at Frenchay want to keep him in hospital until a bump on his head heals up.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who saw the incident, or Callum's bike and the tractor beforehand, should call the police on 101, quoting incident 238 of January 3.
