A WARTIME shell discovered near the Severn Bridge at Beachley was detonated by Royal Navy bomb disposal experts.

The Second World War device was discovered by the slipway by members of the Coast Guard, who called in the bomb squad.

Police closed the road at the Old Ferry Inn, while Petty Officer Mark MacPherson and AB Diver Wesley McKibbin recovered the 10kg shell on Monday afternoon near the Severn Area Rescue Association headquarters. As dusk fell it was taken to a safe area and detonated.
