PLUCKY Lydney live to fight another day in National Two South.

The Severnsiders avoided relegation with a 17-8 win at home to bottom of the league Barnes, but it was anything but plain sailing as the visitors had three tries disallowed.

For Lydney club captain Jim McMahon it was a day for quiet satisfaction, rather than huge celebrations.

He said: "The feeling is one of relief. We were disappointed with how we played and felt we could have done more.

"I thought we had the upper hand but didn't capitalise.

"I wouldn't say we were lucky, but we only did just enough."

McMahon admitted it felt like the game was getting away from Lydney in the second half.

He said: "There was a spell when we couldn't get out of our own half.

"In all honesty, I think we were a bit nervous."

It's been a tough week for the players, following Nick Bartlett's decision to step down from the rugby director's role.

McMahon said: "I wasn't surprised by Nick's decision, I saw it coming.

"It's been a frustrating season at times but we're not that far off being a decent squad.

"Injuries to people like Brett Turner and Chris Holder have hit us hard.

"Everyone knows we've not got the money to compete with a lot of the sides in this league, but when there's a big crowd there's no better place to play than Lydney.

"We want to write off this season, work hard in the summer and come back stronger.

"We certainly don't want to become the league's whipping boys."
