FORMER Gloucester man Dan Murphy will take the reins at Newent with big boots to fill.

Newent stalwart Andy Addis has stepped down as director of rugby after six years, including back-to-back cup final victories at Twickenham, due to increased family and work commitments.

The appointment of Murphy follows another coaching departure from the Green Army, as outgoing head coach Ross McMillan has resigned.

Murphy, who played prop in 91 appearances for the Cherry and Whites, currently plays for Championship side Hartpury and coaches the college’s British Universities and Colleges Sport side.

Murphy also spent four years at London Irish between 2007-2011, for whom he made 48 appearances, before moving to Kingsholm for five seasons until 2016.

He then made a handful of appearances for Harlequins, playing four times in the 2016-17 season.

“Dan will work closely with Ross Webb, who has been appointed captain for the fifth consecutive season, to improve upon the club’s fourth position in South West One West last season,” said Newent chairman John Moore.

Moore also confirmed news of a 15-year license agreement with Newent Town Council.

The agreement will allow Newent to continue to play on the town’s recreation ground.
