National Two South
Lydney 5
Westcombe Park 17
THIS game could not have started better for Lydney, who forged ahead with a second minute try from winger Josh Hannam.
That was about as good as it got for the home side as bottom club Westcombe Park showed plenty of fight to clinch only their second away win of the season.
Lydney's first half display was full of errors and Park made them pay with two close range tries from Dale Bellinger.
Luke Giles added a penalty to his two conversions to give the visitors a 17-5 lead at the break.
Lydney's discipline was poor and Tai Lakabuka and James Bashford both found themselves in the sin-bin towards the end of the half, along with Park winger Kieran Leeper.
Lakabuka threw a punch off the ball, while Bashford got 10 minutes for pulling down a maul.
The Severnsiders lacked cohesion and made too many passing and handling errors.
Lydney hooker Ben Lewis lay on the field with a head injury as the players went to the dressing rooms for the break.
Lewis recovered enough to walk off but his game was over. His presence was certainly missed in the second half as the visitors were able to disrupt the home front-row and win several penalties.
Nick Stoneman did well as a stand-in hooker, but Steve Price fell foul of the ref on several occasions for failing to bind.
Lydney generally dominated a scoreless second period but lacked the cutting edge to put points on the board.
Jimmy Roberts, Dave Arnott and Curtis Russell all made comebacks from the bench, but Westcombe Park were content to let Lydney have possession and defend their line.
Lydney: Josh Innes, Josh Hannam, Craig Jones, Alan Bryan, Tai Lakabuka, Tony Wicks, Stewart Doust, Nick Stoneman, Ben Lewis, Nick Selway, James Bashford, Jim McMahon (capt), Tim Longton, Will Jones, Matt Taylor. Reps: Steve Price, Dave Emery, Jimmy Roberts, Dave Arnott, Curtis Russell.
BEN Lewis is likely to be stood down for three weeks following his injury on Saturday, which means he is set to miss the Shelford trip on February 11.
Speaking on Monday, Ben said: "I was out of it and can only remember the first 20 minutes of the game.
"I can't even remember walking off. My jaw's a bit sore but I'm OK now."
