Forest Hills Seniors trekked across Coleford to take on Forest of Dean Golf Club in the Dean Hills Challenge, writes Geoff Norris.
The 21st edition of the the Individual Stableford competition followed the pattern of the trophy going to a visitor as the Mile Enders’ Vice Captain Kevin Greening posting a four under 40 points.
Before presenting the trophy, Forest of Dean Captain Dave Donoghue thanked Jerry Bolster
for cajoling the home team entrants and Geoff Norris, for encouraging the visitors as some 60 golfers competed.
Forest Hills’ Summer Vase was won by Malcolm Cape with 81-15-66.
Steve Jones led his troops to Lydney for the latest edition of the 12-a-side Triangular Trophy Individual Stableford.
With the top 10 scores counting, the best scorers for Lydney were Shaun Lee, 39, Jamie Grove, 38 and Dave Taylor with 35.
Scott Richards’ six under 42 for the Forest of Dean, was the highest individual score.
He was backed up by Paul Kilburn and Andy Workman.
Gary Davies led for Forest Hills with 35 with 32 for Josh Matthews.
The Forest Hills assault was was led by Gary Davies with 35 and Josh Mathews with 32.
Lydney were overall winners with 313 with Forest of Dean two shots behind followed by Forest Hills.
There were 53 pairs for the Members and Guests competition
In the World Handicap System (WHS) section Dan Prout and Alex Honeywell finished top with an 11 under 47.
Elizabeth Cooper and Lou Bennett were second on countback from John Humphries and Steve Sharett.
Countback was required to determine the the non WHS section with Alex Porter and Jamie Powell edging out Andy Shenton and Fran Beale.
Thanks were given to Shelley and Charlotte on registration duty, Paul Morphey who carried out the starters duties for all the competition, along with other men’s committee members who helped out on the day, the greens team for the presentation of the course and the house staff and Pro Shop for their organisational skills.
Phil Leonard and Barry shattered the 72 par of the Two from Three Multiplier finishing 34 under on 106.
Adrian Vines, Bob Gibson and Geoff Norris were second with 96.
Forest of Dean travelled to Mile End for the first leg of the Miners’ Lamp.
Kev and Roger Hall opened against Jerry Bolster and Rob Tomlinson with Kev managing four birdies.
He birdied the 14th only for Rob to win it with a birdie nett eagle as the visitors won 3&2.
Geoff Norris and Tim Hollingsworth beat Mike Sinclair and Martin Pearce also by 3&2.
The visitors went back in front as Pete Walters and Richard Medlin lost to Kev McEntee and Gary Davis by 3&2 margin.
Mark Graham and Paul Sologub beat Peter Hoare and Phil Hopkins by 3&2 margin followed by an emphatic 4&3 win for Dave Howard and Adrian Vines, over Stuart Duncan and Frank Akenhurst.
Paul Adams and Phil Gwynne then won one up, against Mike Ryder and Andy Bray.
The penultimate encounter, saw Hills’ Mark Barnard and Neil James beat Steve Tucker and Pete Shinfield 6&5
Clive Winward and Kevin Greening, won one up against Phil Lear and Geoff Warren for a final score of Forest Hills 6-2 Forest of Dean with the second leg at Lords Hill on September 1.
