HUNTLEY and Lydney Town B picked up silverware as the North Gloucestershire League’s traditional finale to the season, the Hospitals Cup, got underway.

Huntley beat Soudley 2-1 at Viney Hill’s ground on Sunday (May 15) while the competitions opened the previous day with Lydney’s 2-0 win over Mitcheldean Reserves at Lydbrook Athletic’s Reeds Sport Ground.

There was double celebration for Lydney who were also presented with the North Gloucestershire Division Three championship trophy.

Goals from Dan Hall and Marc Matthews gave Huntley, who finished second in the Premier, the senior cup win over Soudley who finished third in Division One.

Mitcheldean’s task against the Division Three champions was not made any easier when Ross Elliott was sent off midway through the first half.

He was given his marching orders for a push after the ball had gone into touch.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Mitcheldean kept Town out for about an hour.

Town enjoyed the lion’s share of possession throughout the game and Tyler Blount opened the scoring.

Mitcheldean keeper Jack Fortey kept his side in it with a couple of saves in one-on-one situations but Jayson Berry sealed it with a goal just before the whistle.
