LYDNEY’S coaching team bemoaned another disappointing display after the Severnsiders went down 34-22 at Weston Hornets.
The Regentsholme club have endured an indifferent start to life in South West One West with three wins out of nine.
And head coach Lee Fortey and team manager Dave Emery were dismayed after a sixth loss this season that has left them in 12th place in the table.
Fortey said: “Our game management was poor. We kept getting dragged into their type of open running game.
“Our pack was dominant, we just needed to keep it tight, not panic and just look after the ball.
“We knew that on the 4G pitch they always play the same style – fast pace always looking to ship the ball wide with pace and move us around.
“When we finally did operate our game plan, we dominated and scored some good tries but we made too many mistakes, most of which they either scored from or made huge yardage down the pitch.
“We need to learn fast as this was a game we could have easily ground out a win and we will not get many better chances to get that elusive away win.
“On the plus side, there were some good performances and I can see overall improvement which is positive.
“We move on in two weeks’ time to a must win home game against Cullompton”
Emery added: “The performance was simply not good enough. We had a game plan again but too often drifted from the plan and played right into the opposition’s hands.
“The players need to take some responsibility during the game and make some decisions as play evolves and the match develops.
“We were level at half-time, they had two players in the bin, we had backs against forwards on numerous occasions but did not spin the ball out to what would have then been a mismatch.
“Players need to make calls and ensure we capitalise on such opportunities.
“We cannot continue with hard luck stories as the table does not lie. We have a good enough squad to be challenging at the top of the table.”
